Chapter Fifteen

I had a horrible nights sleep, so I wasn't surprised when I woke up at the first signs of light outside. I quietly slid out of bed with out waking up Luken. I put my clothes on then started to walk out of my old room. I stoped first, the gun on the nightstand catching my eye. It was such a weird sight to see. I shook my head and then quietly walked downstairs. Everyone was still asleep, so I went to the kitchen to start some coffee and maybe see if there was something to cook for breakfast. The coffee pot was already going. I looked in the fridge, but the only thing in there was a box of pizza and beer.
"Nice dad. Real nice." I mumbled, and closed the door.
"Sorry there isn't much." He said, and I jumped.
"Geeze dad! You scared me." I whispered.
"I didn't mean to." He told me and poured two cups of coffee.
"What is with the empty fridge and cabinets?" I asked him.
"I get most of my meals at work. There is a food cart right outside the factory." He said.
"Nice." I said sarcasticly. He handed me a cup and we walked to the dining room to sit down at the table...which was also cluttered.
"So, what exactly have you kids gotten yourselves into?" He asked me. "Drugs? Worse? I saw the guns your two friends were carrying."
"Honestly dad, I have no idea." I told him. He looked like he didn't believe me.
"I really don't! I'm just as surprised as you are. I know it isn't drugs or something like that. Luken is a good guy. So are Stuart and Dryden." I said.
"I'm not trying to give you a hard time. I just want to know whats going on." He said, and gave me a half smile. We sat there and sipped our coffee not saying much. We heard someone in the kitchen, and both looked around the corner of the wall. Dryden was awake. He walked into the dining room and joined us at the messy table with his coffee.
"Hey." He said to us and sat down.
"Hey." My dad said. They didn't really look at each other.
"One big happy family." I muttered, and the both looked up at me.
"Sorry." I said, and smiled.
"So. Mind telling us what is going on here?" My dad asked.
"Yeah. It's a complicated, long story, but I'll do my best." He said, and took a big drink of his coffee.

"I don't know all of Luken, and Stuart's stories, but I can tell you mine." He started off. "I'm an undercover cop." He said. My dad and I both looked at him startled.
"What?" I asked.
"Yeah. Shocking, isn't it? Luken and Stuart are too. You'd never guess it would you?" He asked. "Yout both shouldn't even know, but our cover here in Boston was blown, at least theirs was. I guess it doesn't matter.
I've worked with them before, but never on anything big. That is why I was surpised to run into them at your apartment. Small world isn't?" He asked. I just nodded. I had goosebumps on my arms. "I always worked in California. Mostly on small stuff. This bigger case popped up here, and since this is where I'm from, I was transferred and asked to work with the Boston team. I didn't find out that Luken and Stuart were a part of the team until after I ran into them at your place. I guess they were transferred parcialy for the same reason. Anyway, a case that they were working on was spoiled by an inside source. Aparently it was a case that is connected up here to the Guns. I don't know what the old case was, because I wasn't on the job. I do know that Luken And Stuart are in trouble now. The bad guys have their names and know they are here. As for me, I don't think they know I'm an undercover yet." He stopped when Stuart walked in the room.
"Really?" I asked Stuart.
"Really. Only they don't know we are cops. They think we are snitches. I imagine if they knew we were undercover they would have sent in bigger guys then Taylor and his friends." He said. There was no where else to sit, so Stuart just stood against the wall.
"What is your case here?" I asked him.
"The Guns, obviously. That is about all I can say though." Stuart said, then looked at Dryden, as if he caught him saying something he shouldn't have.
"This is nuts." I said.
"That bad part is they know something is up. They even know where we were meeting." Dryden said.
"You guys can't be cops! You have normal lives." I said.
"Normal lives that have been fabricated." Stuart said. "I told Luken not to get interested in you, but he loves you kid." Stuart said. I got angry when he called me kid. I was the same age as he was. And the way he said it was condesending.
"Let me guess. Luken was in the Coffee shop that day because I was Taylor's ex girlfriend. Not because he thought he recognized me." I said.
"Yeah." Stuart said. My eyes teared up.
"God. Look what you did." Dryden said to Stuart.
"Sorry. I'm sorry." Stuart said to me. I couldn't look at him. "That was how it was. But he fell for you, right away. That's real."
I just stared at my cup of coffee.
"What about Taylor? He wants out. So does Tracy." I blurted out.
"What?" Dryden asked, leaning forward.
"No. Come on! He's just saying that." Stuart said.
"How do you know? I seem to remember that's how you and Luken ended up in California. Because you wanted out of the shit you were in here." Dryden said to him. I suddenly realized Dryden had left out some of the story he had just told us. He knew more of Luken and Stuart's stories then he admited. Stuart stiffened, shook his head, and walked out of the room. We heard the front door open and close. I looked over at my dad who was just staring at some magiznes that where stacked in front of him.
"Dad, are you okay?" I asked him.
"I messed up." He said.
"What?" I asked him.
"My kids are both in danger. And I'm a lonely widowed alcoholic who gave up on raising them right after their mother died." He said.
"Don't say that." Dryden said to him, standing up.
"It's true." My dad said. He looked so depressed, and made me want to cry again.
"Sis, can you give us minute." Dryden asked me.
"Yeah." I said, and stood up. I walked out of the room. Ted was sitting on the couch.
"Did you hear all that?" I asked him.
"Yeah. Crazy stuff." He said.
"Tell me about it." I told him, and sat down. He put his arm around me and I started to cry. Olie and Ceci came walking out a minute later, yawning.
"Whats wrong?" Ceci asked me.
"Long story." I told her. She looked up at Olie, and he hugged her. I think we all just wanted to go home. Luken walked out, and I stood up. He smiled at me, and tried to hug me. I just pushed him away, and he looked at me confused. I turned around and walked out the front door. I saw Stuart standing down in the street smoking.
"Can we go please?" I shouted at him. He nodded, and threw is cigarrette in the street, then walked back up to the patio.
"I'm sorry about everything." He said. I just shrugged and we walked inside to tell everyone it was time to leave.
